Big Black Bart the Bat

Bart sports his bat costume while celebrating Halloween on 96th street in Stone Harbor, New Jersey!

Stone Harbor’s 96th street is always decorated beautifully for fall—as well as the upcoming Christmas season.

Pretty as a Picture: as a Pumpkin!

Gracie posed for this picture on a day we showcased the turtles at Conover’s Farm Stand down the road on Stone Harbor Boulevard.

Fresh Conover corn is one of the turtles’ favorite treats!

Gracie’s outfit—as well as Rocky’s outfit coming up later—was created courtesy of the talents and imagination of the Prayer Shawl group at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church in the Villas, New Jersey, where I am the organist, and where the turtles have participated in numerous events.

Bart’s Samson Halloween Costume

Bart was all ready to play Samson in a live turtle skit for Holy Spirit Lutheran Church. Gracie would have played Delilah, of course. We used corn silk for Samson’s hair. Unfortunately, rehearsals did not go well because Bart refused to destroy the temple at the end of the story. So our live turtle production of Samson and Delilah never quite made it to an actual performance.

Bart has played the role of Goliath in the story of David (played by Rocky) and Goliath (Gracie plays King Saul’s beautiful daughter) many times over the years for Catholic schools, church services, and vacation bible schools.

But we still think Bart rocked his Samson costume—and he could also dress up for Halloween as a rock star!

Rockin’ Rocky Rocking a Jack-O-Lantern Costume!

Rockin’ Rocky is one of my most recent songs about our 3-toed box turtle, Rocky. The song was created for the Summer Collaborative Library Reading Theme, “Libraries Rock!” We performed Rockin’ Rocky as well as other rock-style Turtlesinger songs at library shows throughout that summer.

Rocky’s shell helps him look like a jack-o-lantern for Halloween. Just yesterday, out of 38 contestants, Rocky won 3rd place for this outfit in Sea Isle City Recreation's Howl-O-Ween Pet Costume Contest! Go to their Facebook page to see all the wonderful pets in their Halloween costumes...spoiler alert: 1st place went to a horse!

We also love how the orange coloring of Rocky’s eyes, neck, and even arms match his outfit!

Trick-or-Treating with Turtles

While a trick-or-treater looked on, even Spike donned a costume with Bart as a bunny (you can just see his white tail on the back of his shell) when we joined trick-or-treaters for Halloween at the Jersey Shore Children’s Museum at the Shore Mall.

Children could participate in Turtlesinger Turtle Trick-or-Treat: they could watch a turtle do a trick (like Bart pushing his barbell or making fountains come out of his nose—we’re not making any of this up)—or they could feed a turtle a treat!

We enjoyed doing several fun events with the turtles there.

Jack-O-Lanterns on Parade!

We had a great time sporting porch light jack-o-lantern masks over our motorcycle helmets (we cut out the eyes so we could see), and riding in Halloween parades!

We also had a flaming fake fire pumpkin behind my seat rest in the back.

We enjoyed riding with our former motorcycle club, the RWBFR (Red, White and Blue Freedom Riders) in Halloween parades in Sea Isle City and Cape May. The club was formed shortly after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center to honor those lost there.

Turtle for Halloween

One year, I rode dressed as Shelly the Turtle behind Charlie the jack-o-lantern on the motorcycle in the Ocean City Halloween Parade!

Shelly the Turtle has appeared in Stone Harbor, Rio Grande, and many times at the Cape May County Benefit Motorcycle Poker Run for the Turtles!

That turtle costume is nice and warm for cold Halloween nights!

Best Costume Ever?

One summer, Charlie and I took turns in the best costume ever: playing Curley the French Fry at Morey’s Piers!

We loved this job, and felt like rock stars—did you know Curley is referred to the Mickey Mouse of New Jersey? Hugging and high-fiving the public is Curley’s job!

That is one hot costume in the summer, and has given us great respect for the work of professional mascots everywhere.

We were not allowed to leave as the mascot for Morey’s Piers for Halloween—but couldn’t resist including Curley in our parade of costumes here.

Thanks as always for reading and sharing Halloween with us this year!
