Turtles Are Reptiles!

Daniel’s grandparents live in Avalon. We taught Daniel the name of the turtles we were catching and studying: diamondback terrapins, the only turtle in the world specifically adapted for life in the salt marsh!

Here we conducted diamondback terrapin research, which we will share with The Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor. Out of the 364 terrapins (with some repeat catches) we identified 67 different terrapins this year in Avalon while the Shell Bay crabbing dock where we usually do our research underwent repairs from damage to the dock in June.

Daniel helped us look for and count diamondback terrapin heads as they appeared in the water around the crabbing dock. We also taught Daniel that all the terrapins he got to see us catch were females.

Reptile Awareness for Daniel

Daniel got to feel the skin of the back leg of a terrapin. We taught Daniel that this was a safe place to touch her as they are wild turtles and sometimes try to bite with their very sharp beaks!

We showed Daniel how we scanned each turtle with a scanner along the back legs to see if the Wetlands Institute had implanted microchips.

Daniel also got to see how the terrapins made their own exits off the dock by shifting their shells sideways through the slats on the dock.

Daniel always greeted us with a smile, and we were always glad to see him and his family! Daniel’s special donation from the heart meant the world to us. Thank you, Daniel, for giving to charities like Turtlesinger, Inc., and for caring about reptiles like turtles!

We also like to take this opportunity on National Reptile Awareness Day to pay homage to reptiles besides turtles that we also love.

An Awesome Reptile:
The Eastern King Snake!

We always keep an eye out for any live snakes we see during the year that we can include in our October Reptile Awareness Day Blog, and this year in June we were lucky enough to be able to photograph and video a big, beautiful Eastern King Snake!

The King of Snakes!

Eastern King snakes are not only harmless to humans, but they are called “the king” because they can catch and kill venomous snakes like copperheads and rattlesnakes.

BTW we love all snakes, and a great live video feed of rattlesnakes can be found at www.rattlecam.org! You can watch them there all spring, summer and fall, and even see baby rattlesnakes in September and beyond.

Smooth Snake Moves

We encountered this eastern king snake by a walking path in Cape May Court House. Their New Jersey range is only in the southern portion: lucky us!

This one was in a typical eastern king snake habitat: under some pines and close to bogs and a lake. It was 5 or 6 feet long (they can reach 7 feet), and you can see how beautifully it moves along. We approached and filmed it calmly, and it had no interest in harming us in any way.

We have also encountered other fabulous reptiles like lizards along this path, as well as other reptiles like turtles: red-bellied turtles, painted turtles, and mud turtles!

Thanks for reading and celebrating Daniel and National Reptile Awareness Day with us!
