Holding Hands

I fell in love with this big bruiser of a monitor lizard at the Honolulu Zoo—and the feeling appeared mutual!

I used to love caring for a big tegu lizard and other lizards when I was a reptile keeper at the Cape May County Zoo. I’ve also loved caring for different iguanas. Again, my first love was turtles and I only wanted to care for turtles, but found out I couldn’t pick and choose, and had to care for ALL the reptiles. I then developed a love and appreciation for all reptiles.

Tongue-Tied

What an awesomely blue tongue this fellow has!

I’ve also been lucky to see the beautiful blue tail of a five-lined skink here in Cape May County at the former Leaming’s Garden in Swainton, New Jersey. Here’s to reptiles in all their fabulous colors!

I also did not want to have to care for snakes: but have come to love snakes!

Eye See You

Last year we saw only dead snakes on the roads, so this garter snake is the first of 3 live snakes we spotted this year!

Smooth Operator

This beautiful garter snake was sunning itself at the lake’s edge in the Richard M. Cameron Cameron Wildlife Sanctuary at Cape May County Park North in Palermo, New Jersey. The photo and video of this snake were taken at the end of March of this year.

Our next live snake encounter was in an entirely different location. To see it, SCROLL DOWN...

Longfellow

This WAS a long fellow! In fact, eastern black rat snakes can grow from 6 to 8 feet long and are the largest snake in New Jersey! This black rat snake swam right past us while on the south end of the boardwalk at the Ockie Wisting Recreation Complex pond in Rio Grande (also Cape May County) New Jersey. We have seen snakes like this here before, curled up on the same sunny bank as this one—perhaps even the same one.

Rippling Reptile

We felt so lucky to see this snake swim right past us, and to capture it on film.

Word has it that black rat snakes are very calm and friendly snakes, so maybe that is why it came so close to us. These videos were taken on April 20th of this year.

Road Runner

We stopped our motorcycle near sunset in Dennis Township, New Jersey to make sure this black rat snake did not get run over!

For 2 fabulous reptile sites, visit rattlecam.org and tourdeturtles.org! We could talk about reptiles like the 163 diamondback terrapin hatchlings we’ve released so far this year from nests in our yard—but it’s time to close now, and to thank you for reading about reptiles on National Reptile Awareness Day!
