Children Can Read to a Live Turtle…or a Cat!

I took a week off from the blog so Charlie and I could work on the website—if you haven’t noticed, we’ve added a new page: “FaceTime Read to a Live Turtle!” So, let your library and/or any children you know of about it who would like to read to a live turtle. Our cat, Wally (pictured left) is also willing to volunteer to hear a story! Also check out the 12 pictures of kids reading to the turtles when you click on the new link! We refer to Spike in the pictures as “Baby Spike” since he has gotten so much bigger and want the kids who choose Spike to be prepared for a much bigger Spike than the one in the pictures. 😊

A Flight of Cormorants…

Today I wanted to share some incredible video taken in our back yard on the salt marsh here in Cape May County. If you’ve already seen it, it’s definitely worth another look! The salt marsh is the diamondback terrapin’s home, but of course many other birds and animals live here, too, which we’ll share with you. One spring phenomenon we always watch for is the grouping of cormorants as they work in unison to fish the channels of the back bays behind our house. But we had NEVER seen them in such numbers as we did last month! We figure this may be due to people quarantining as other birds and animals around the world have also been gathering in greater numbers with less people around. We’re so glad we can share this with you, AND…

A Swim of Cormorants!

Here’s another video of the same group of cormorants who came back (in the rain!) a little while later to corral the fish in the other direction. Apparently, cormorants who gather can be called a flight, a gulp, a sunning or a swim of cormorants. 3 out of 4 isn’t bad—they flew in, their numbers made me gulp, then it was wonderful to watch them swim (and eat)—but it was not sunny that day! Thanks again for reading!
