4th Day in a Row!

Turn up your volume to hear how we became accustomed at this point to finding new baby turtles every day.

What a totally awesome thing to get accustomed to!!! These were the first two turtles we discovered on August 29th, our 4th day in a row of finding hatchlings.

Chapter Six: Such An Abundance of Turtles!

If you look very carefully, you can see 3 tiny hatchlings moving in the center nest!

If we could see their movements, imagine how sharp-sighted birds could see them! We’re so grateful we covered the nests so the hatchlings didn’t become bird food.

Reaching For the Stars

Listen to hear about how turtles—and even tiny hatchlings—are excellent diggers and climbers! We don’t even know if some of our baby terrapins climbed out of their nest coverings in this way.

When I worked at the Cape May County Zoo, I watched a large, adult snapping turtle climb a 12-foot chain link fence in exactly the way this tiny terrapin did: using all 4 legs to climb the wall! The snapping turtle was able to simply drop over the other side of the fence once he/she reached the top, just as this terrapin could have dropped to the soft sand to then continue on his/her way if we had not discovered it in time.

A Magical August Ending

We were blessed with 2 more hatchlings on August 30th, bringing our total babies to release that evening to 17, and our grand total of hatchlings from our turtle sanctuary so far to: 66 hatchlings!

This blog has taken you with us on our turtle adventure through the last three days of August: what an amazing end to an August we’ll never forget!

Our next blog continues with Chapter Seven, the final Chapter of our Turtle Fairy Tale and what happened in September. Every fairy tale has a villain, and ours is no exception: so get ready for an upcoming plot twist!
