Happy Dr. Seuss’s Birthday!

Here is our Yertle the Turtle book with 3 sizes of plush Yertle the Turtles!

This book and these Yertle turtles were gifts from our pet sitter, Melissa: thanks, Melissa!

Notice the one huge difference between real live turtles and Yertle the Turtle?

Real live turtles have no hair!

We can’t wait until it’s safe again to do live Turtlesinger programs utilizing all of these Yertle tools to honor Dr. Seuss.

Happy National Read Across America Day!

Here on the Turtlesinger.org website, every day can be Read Across America Day!

A child is reading Yertle the Turtle to Rocky!

Just go to https://turtlesinger.org/tales.html or choose FaceTime Read to a Live Turtle at the top of our home page and there you can scroll down and watch all the pictures of children reading to the Turtlesinger turtles grow.

Just hover over each picture and watch them enlarge!

Happy World Wildlife Day tomorrow!

Spring is just around the corner, and we will be watching for wild snapping turtles like the ones we saw wrestling one spring, pictured here.

Can you see the 2 snapping turtles in this photo?

These 2 were very intent on their business and paid no notice of us as we watched for quite a while. Sitting quietly with little to no movement requires patience, but is a great way to see and capture lots of wildlife on camera.

Jousting Snappers!

This wrestling match between 2 big, wild snapping turtles seems pretty civilized. We were able to watch the wrestling match end with one snapper swimming away, and no visible scars on either turtle.

These wild snapping turtles were wrestling at the Cape May County Park pond. Other wildlife watchers we know told us of also seeing snappers grappling at the Nature Conservancy's South Cape May Meadows Preserve.

Happy Painted Turtles!

We were delighted to discover this wild community of painted turtles while looking for snapping turtles in Cape May Court House, New Jersey. Keep watching this video for closeups of some of these painted turtles.

The smaller turtles are the males, and you may notice some of the males chasing the larger females! Also, you may notice the males have larger front claws/fingernails as well as larger tails than the females.

Something painted turtles and snapping turtles have in common is that they are more cold-tolerant than some other turtles and therefore some of the first kinds of turtles to be seen in the spring. We’ll be watching for them as well as other hearty turtle species like wild spotted turtles and red-bellied turtles…can’t wait!

Thanks so much for reading and joining us for our turtle celebration of Dr. Seuss’s Birthday and National Read Across America Day today, and World Wildlife Day tomorrow!
