Green in Glass Turtle

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, our glass turtle is filled with green!

Maybe you’ve heard of real, live green sea turtles. I used to listen to a Green Turtle song sung by Burl Ives when I was growing up.

Green sea turtles are not actually green on the outside unless their shells are covered with green algae.

Green turtles are named for the color of their flesh.

Turtle From Above

A turtle that is not called green but often can look green is the snapping turtle. Snapping turtles are sometimes referred to as “old mossbacks” due to the algae that collects on their shells. This algae can help serve to further camouflage their bodies and aid them in hunting their prey.

In order to keep our cats Wally and Ollie from eating the green decorations inside our glass turtle, you can see here that we put a small glass dish over the opening and fill that with another special turtle etched on green glass.

Turtle Etching

This paperweight green glass sea turtle was a gift from our nephew, Daniel.

We have been fortunate to have seen real, live, wild green sea turtles around the world in Australia, Hawaii, and the Galapagos Islands!

At the Cayman Islands, I was able to watch a green sea turtle hatchling look me in the eye as it popped out of its shell! Also while there, I was able to help release 2 dinner-plate-sized 1-year-old green sea turtles into the sea to start their new lives.

In St. Croix, we were able to help and hold green sea turtle hatchlings before releasing them to freedom.

Thanks as always for reading and for helping us celebrate both decorative and live green sea turtles on St. Patrick’s Day!
