Summer Dreams with a Promise of Spring!

A predator revealed on April 13th one of several nests unknown to us. But 2 days later, a hatchling emerged from the nest of the terrapin we named Summer (because she laid her eggs on June 21, 2025—the first day of summer)!

Here you’re looking at Summer’s hatchling, which emerged on April 15, 2026, after 298 days!!

Spring Terrapin Hatchlings

The terrapin we named Shawn laid her eggs on July 13, 2025. Her first hatchling emerged on April 17, 2026, after 278 days! 5 days later 2 more hatchlings emerged on April 23, 2026, after 284 days!!

Here you can watch 2 photos and a video of some of Shawn’s tiny hatchlings.

Spring Hatchlings Everywhere!

We found a stray spring hatchling in our yard on May 13th of this year. Overall, we discovered 299 eggshells in our yard and accounted for 268 total hatchlings. Again, of those 268 hatchlings, while some of them succumbed to a very harsh winter, crows, skunks, raccoons and foxes, 203 made it to the water!

We also found terrapin hatchlings this spring on the road to Reed’s Beach on May 10th, May 17th and May 26th. We have 3 photos and 2 videos of these wild hatchlings here, and you can see in the videos that after we put them down, they’re very wary at first—but soon they’re back on their way!

Terrapin Nest Boxes!

In this photo you can see 1 of 3 terrapin nest boxes placed by The Wetlands Institute for storing their terrapin eggs this year while their property undergoes a raising due to too much of their terrapin nesting area being flooded too regularly. Turtlesinger, Inc. is very excited to be one of the nest box locations (the other 2 nest boxes are east of the Wetlands Institute property, closer to Stone Harbor). Now, we will get to observe hundreds of terrapins emerging not only from our backyard nests—but also from their nesting box! The Institute has also installed a camera to observe whether predators will attempt to predate the nesting box. That along with our own cameras will be sure to capture any egg-loving animals. Finally, for a sneak preview of this year’s nesting terrapins right in the marsh behind our house, SCROLL DOWN…

2026 Terrapins Gathering

We noticed a dozen or more terrapins gathering at low tide behind our house, where we also see them sunning themselves. The difference in head sizes makes us think they are males and females. We also see male and female terrapins gather in large numbers at Reed's Beach and Heislerville around this time of year.

In the video, a boat goes by the nearby main channel, grinding the mud at low tide and scaring at least one of the terrapins back into the water.

We're so excited to see the terrapins getting ready for this nesting season! Thanks as always for reading and for catching up with last year's batch before this year's batch begins (and sorry for the shaky camera work)!
