The idea of turtle lollipops came out of wanting a way to feed Bart safely, because his beak is serrated like a knife, and sharp! Bart would never bite anyone out of hostility or meanness, but when he’s hungry, he’s eager to eat and could bite someone feeding him by mistake. So, we save our chopsticks and they make perfect turtle lollipop sticks! Bart loves eating turtle lollipops—possibly because they mimic vegetable stalks in nature, or because turtles in the wild would be able to eat hanging fruit. Another reason he might like his turtle lollipops so much is because turtles have a very good sense of smell, and having his food on a stick reduces any other smells on our fingers or hands from the food, which may make it even more appealing. All we know is that Bart seems to like being fed on a stick more than any other way! This may also be because red-footed tortoises like Bart are extremely gregarious and enjoy the stimulation of human interaction. During this Covid-19 shutdown of our Turtlesinger Shows, Bart seems to miss the stimulation of them the most out of all our turtles. If he could talk, we think he would say, “Where are all the kids and people to feed me lollipops!?”
Thanks as always for reading, and we hope you celebrate National Lollipop Day with your own lollipops in your own special way!
