Imagine our surprise to see this considerable rat coming toward us from a little distance right on top of the Seawall! This furry fellow seemed quite oblivious to us, so we just watched and kept quiet (although I was fully prepared to utter the cliché “eeeek!” if it climbed my leg)…
Actually, I got rather used to rats while working in the reptile houses of The Bronx Zoo and the Cape May County Zoo.
Subway rats were a common sight when I lived in New York City, but I’ve seen more wild muskrats than wild common rats here in Cape May County (biggest surprise was when I watched a great white egret swallow a muskrat once, saying “No way! No WAY!!!” as I watched it go down its throat)!
Anyway, it’s always exciting walking the North Wildwood Seawall, and we hope to capture some decent footage of the beautiful winter loons frequenting the water there. Thanks as always for reading!
