Countdown With Bart:
Can He Do It?

Along with eating the lucky grapes goes the tradition of wearing red underwear: perfect for Bart the red-footed tortoise who is already wearing red on his feet, as well as his tail and even parts of his shell!

If a grape is bitter, one is supposed to watch out for that month in the countdown of the chimes. Bart seemed to find none of them bitter, so we look forward to enjoying Bart’s good luck every month of the year with him in 2022! Congratulations, Bart: You did it!!! Bacon, Cornbread, and Crabs!

Thursday, December 30th was National Bacon Day, so we decided to celebrate National Bacon Day and Southern New Year’s together by having bacon, eggs, and cornbread for our New Year’s Eve dinner. Black-eyed peas, greens and cornbread are a Southern New Year’s tradition. The Southern saying goes “Peas for pennies, greens for dollars, and cornbread for gold.”

I also read that eating fish on New Year’s is good luck because fish move forward, while eating crab is not good luck because crabs move sideways. What made me think of crabs was the crab tree-topper pictured here on the 25-foot tall Christmas tree that went up Christmas Eve at our local Stone Harbor Boulevard Bay Side Seafood Co. and Farm Market.

But to read about a New Year’s tradition that celebrates crabs, SCROLL DOWN…

Easton’s Crab Drop
Chesapeake 2022 Celebration

According to the 12/21/21 post online in The Talbot Spy, Easton Downtown and Talbot County Tourism hosts the “Cheers to the Chesapeake” crab drop celebration on New Year’s Eve night, including dropping their 6-foot-wide crab from 25 feet in the air to ring in the New Year!

The blue crab is iconic to Maryland and the New Jersey shore, so we were delighted to discover this new local tree-topper (pictured closer here). We also discovered another beautiful coastal tree-topper this Christmas: a lighthouse!

We hope you’ve enjoyed watching Bart celebrate the New Year and we thank you for reading about our other newly-discovered traditions as well. Again: HAPPY NEW YEAR from us and from all the turtles!
