Inviting Path

This is how the Lizard Tail Swamp Preserve Yellow Trail looks before it turns into a very soft, leafy trail.

Imagine all the box turtles who must be hibernating under the leaves here now!

Looking to the Skies

Sometimes it’s wonderful to just stop and look skyward at the tall trees.

We were able to get glimpses of sun way up high in the late afternoon.

Bouncy Trail

We took a little video to show how soft and even bouncy the yellow trail can be in spots!

I don’t know why there are long strings hanging from my coat—but a friend's cat thought they were terrific cat toys to play with!

These trails are very easy on the legs and feet.

The yellow trail as well as the blue trail at Lizard Tail Swamp Preserve are very well marked.

Tree Hugger

OK, vanity was going to prevent me from sharing this picture, but I wanted you to see just how large some of the trees there are.

And, no, I’m not cold…wearing 2 hats keeps me warm!

Beautiful Belleplain State Forest

Here’s just one of the beautiful scenes on Nature Trail 1 in Belleplain State Forest.

Belleplain has 40 miles of trails in its 21,320 acres of forest!

Beautiful Belleplain Trails

Parts of Nature Trails 1 and 2 wind around Lake Nummy.

Along the way on trail signs, you can read about the many kinds of trees in this forest.

Still as Glass

Boy was it a calm day when we were there, with the trees reflected in the lake like glass!

We like to frequent Belleplain trails when we want to take a walk out of the wind.

This tree trunk and tree limbs in the water look like perfect sunning spots for turtles in the Spring!

The park rangers here have told us about finding baby mud turtles in this lake.

Bridge and History

Near this bridge is a sign giving you a little history of this lake.

26-acre Lake Nummy was previously a cranberry bog.

Lake Nummy was named after the last Lenni Lenape Indian chief in the area.

Full of Fish…and Turtles!

The nearby sign reminded us the lake contains sunfish, pickerel and bullheads.

It also reminded us it contains painted and snapping turtles!

We will definitely be on the lookout for these turtles as the weather warms up.

An Inviting Path

We loved Nature Trails 1 and 2 and can’t wait to see what wildlife we find on them in the Spring.

We have no doubt that eastern box turtles can also be found in Belleplain State Forest.

Think of all the turtles at Belleplain hibernating right now underneath the water, mud, dirt, and leaves.

Thanks for taking these trails with us! We’ll be taking you with us on more winter trails in upcoming blogs.

Thanks as always for reading!
