Working Up An Appetite!

Here Gracie is smelling the air after we blew the candle out for her. Turtles can snort air out of their nostrils but have no lips to blow out a candle like we can.

Turtle “lips” are instead like a bird beak—and with sharp edges, as demonstrated by Gracie in the next video.

Tucking In

Here Gracie goes all in on one of the strawberries, using her sharp beak to cut the berry easily.

Gracie avoids the green strawberry hull, but Big Black Bart eats the whole strawberry: hull and all!

Gracie starts getting what we like to call her “strawberry lipstick" on her mouth, and strawberry juice even comes out her nose!

A Little Help

Gracie often likes her food to be hand-fed. It can make it easier for her to eat, although she is also perfectly capable of eating by herself.

You’ll notice more strawberry juice or bubbles exiting Gracie’s nose. As a child I once laughed so hard that Kool-Aid came out my nose: and it hurt! But apparently it doesn’t hurt the turtles, as Big Black Bart will also shoot fountains of water out his nose (as did our dear departed snapping turtle, Spike). Maybe it doesn’t hurt the turtles because their noses are part of their hard beak and not composed of skin like us humans. Whatever the case, Gracie seemed to enjoy her birthday strawberries immensely.

Celebrate Gracie’s Half Birthday With Her!

Last year for the first time we celebrated Gracie’s August 25th HALF-birthday (when she would turn 35 and a half) on August 24, 2024 during our usual Live Turtle Encounters on the lawn at 96th Street and Third Avenue in Stone Harbor. As you can see, Rocky was also in attendance to help celebrate that day!

This year we are celebrating Gracie’s August 25th Half-Birthday on Saturday, August 23rd (weather permitting). If you would like to wish Gracie a Happy 36 ½ birthday in person, just call us at (609) 205-9248 for the exact time we’ll be on the lawn in Stone Harbor.

Thanks as always for reading and for celebrating Gracie’s 36th birthday with us today!
