Sweetly Swimming



Turn up your volume to hear all about our newest batch of babies! We started by giving the babies some fresh, shallow water for hydration—turtles can absorb water through their skin—and also if they wanted to drink. Wild terrapins in the brackish waters of the salt marsh drink rainwater that collects on top of the water.


Then we gave them marsh water off our dock—the same water in which they would soon be released.

Sixteen So Far That Day!



Listen to hear about these two adorable hatchlings from the nest that already produced 9 hatchlings earlier that morning!


So far our count of babies for the second day stood at 16!


Our grand total count of baby terrapins discovered so far over two days was 42!!

Two Tiny Terrapins



You can see how tiny the terrapins are/were.


When handling small or large terrapins, be aware that their claws are sharp and all four legs are very strong! It can be easy for them to jump out of your grip, so holding wild turtles close to the ground is not a bad idea in case they fall.

Terrapin in Hand



Listen as we mention the “egg tooth” on the tip of the hatchling’s mouth.


The reason we are continually mentioning this is because the only time you see an egg tooth is on hatchling turtles. The egg tooth falls off and eventually disappears.


Children always find it remarkable when we tell them turtles only have 1 tooth that soon falls off!

And the Turtles Just Kept on Coming!



Again: keep your volume turned up to hear about a turtle treasure hunt that continued all day long!


We misspoke in this video when we said there were 16 hatchlings so far (we lost count): the count was actually 18 so far that day!

19 Turtles on the Second Day!



August 27th ended up producing 19 more turtles to release that night, bringing our grand total discovered in our new turtle sanctuary to: 45 new diamondback terrapin hatchlings!
