Twelve More Terrapins!



Here’s another “talkie” to hear our continued excitement!


Diamondback terrapins are the only turtle in the world adapted exclusively for living in the brackish waters of the salt marsh. They were once considered a gourmet food item, but New Jersey terrapins are now considered a non-game species with no hunting season.

Tiny, Perfect Terrapins



We hope you love seeing baby turtles, because you’re going to see a lot of them! You'll hear us call them "babies" because they have just emerged from their nests so tiny and cute, but brand-new reptiles like turtles are nothing like other babies--for instance, baby birds who also hatch from eggs and are completely dependent on their parents. These little turtles are really just miniature adults with no need for parental guidance--in fact, they never see the mother who lays the eggs.

Watch Terrapins Emerge



We sped up 32 minutes and 11 seconds of movement in the nest to 1 minute and 20 seconds so you can watch the wonder of seeing these tiny creatures get their first breath of fresh air and glimpse of the sky and the world after digging up from their nest cavity!

More Hatchlings from the 3rd Nest of the Day!

The Wetlands Institute has summer interns that do turtle patrols looking for terrapins injured on the roads, collecting data and possibly collecting terrapins whose eggs they can save for incubation.

26 Hatchlings in One Day!



You'll hear about how we released 26 hatchlings from 3 different nests on our first day discovering the tiny babies: what a day!!!


We have no footage of releasing the babies as we did it after dark, but it was very exciting releasing them to freedom and the big wide world!
