Turtle Soccer Valentine!

This turtle valentine is dedicated to our nephew, Jonathan.

Jonathan is crazy about soccer and has been kicking a soccer ball ever since he was very small.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Jonathan!

Redfoot Tortoise Valentine

Here’s a red-footed tortoise like our own Big Black Bart to wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day!

Those red markings go great with Valentine’s Day. This Valentine was for sale at the NYTTS (New York Turtle and Tortoise Society) Annual Turtle Show, where our Bart won Best in Show!

Snail and Turtle Valentine

Franklin is a famous turtle, and we purchased a book of his special valentines. What do snails and turtles have in common? They both have shells!

Although here Franklin is gently asking the snail to be his valentine, real, live turtles often eat snails, and our box turtle Rocky also loves slugs.

This valentine reminds me of a joke: A snail was riding on the back of a turtle. What did the snail say?

“WHEEEEEEEE!!!”

Swinging Your Way on Valentine’s Day

This Valentine is dedicated to my dad.

My dad made me a tree swing in our yard, where I spent many days of my childhood swinging and looking up into the leaves of the tree.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Dad!

Bee My Valentine?

This Franklin valentine seems to be making a play on the word “be” with so many bees in it.

You can see in this Valentine that Franklin has sharp claws on all 4 of his feet.

This is also true for real, live turtles! So, be careful when you pick them up and help them across the road.

Slow Glad You’re My Valentine!

You may remember our glass turtle shown here was filled with Christmas ornaments in December.

This Valentine turtle is dedicated to my sister, Kathy, who created all the sparkly paper hearts for our parents’ 65th wedding anniversary celebration. The theme was the King and Queen of Hearts, and when clearing the table, I couldn’t resist keeping them instead of throwing them away.

So, now they come out every Valentine’s Day to help decorate our glass turtle.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Kathy!

Hearts A-Flutter

This Franklin valentine also contains butterflies, and it’s not unusual to see real, live turtles with butterflies resting on their backs as they sun themselves.

We own 2 Franklin books: one about Franklin’s Thanksgiving and another about Franklin’s Christmas.

Unlike stories about real, live turtles, Franklin books include lessons for children about families and sharing.

Valentine in Uniform

Here Franklin is wearing what reminds me of my high school marching band uniform. I played the glockenspiel, or bells. They were really heavy to carry for a 9-year-old, but thankfully they came out with a lighter version to carry in parades.

Talking about marches also reminds me of Big Black Bart’s song I wrote called “Song For Bart.” It’s on my first Turtlesinger CD and is a rousing march!

Sleepy Turtle Valentine

This valentine reminds me of another Turtlesinger song I wrote called “Turtle Lullaby.” Here are some of the lyrics:

Rocky and Gracie’s eyes shut tight, and Bart tucks his head in his shell for the night,

when the turtles go to sleep…

I also adapted this song to become a Christmas duet, where the lullaby is sung for the Baby Jesus.

We’ve performed both lullabies many times!

Be My Valentine

Charlie, The Turtletoter (my valentine) got me this plush valentine turtle many years ago, and I just love it.

My valentine and I will have been married for 22 years this coming September!

We have spent most of those years Turtlesinging, starting in the year 2000 and ending last March with Covid. Hopefully we’ll be able to continue our live Turtlesinger events sometime in 2021.

Valentine Turtle Knight in Shining Armor

Franklin wears a suit of armor in this valentine! This reminds me of the built-in armor real, live turtles have, starting of course with their shells. The scales on their legs and feet can also serve as armor.

Snapping turtles, who have little in the way of armor on the underside of their bodies, have other protection in the form of formidable claws, sharp beak and bite, and incredible strength. Their shell is also sharp and jagged at the back!

Turtle Teacher Valentine

Though they haven’t always been in the form of valentines, this valentine reminds me of the many notes we’ve gotten from students at the many schools where we have performed our Turtlesinger shows.

These are often in the form of thank-you notes which include pictures the children have drawn of Rocky, Gracie, Bart and Spike.

Now we often talk to young adults who remember when they were just kids and saw our shows at their schools.
