Just the Right Spot

In upstate New York, Charlie scratched my parents’ cat, Squeaks, in such a good spot that Squeaks “pretend-scratched” right along, like we’ve seen videos of dogs doing, too.

When I worked at the Cape May County Zoo, the giant tortoises appeared to enjoy being scratched and would immediately start stretching their long necks out. Later I read that the reason they exhibit this behavior is that in the wild, exposing their necks allowed birds to fly in where they normally couldn’t reach to remove insects.

But for now: back to our Thanksgiving travels! For a picture of an upstate New York white Thanksgiving, SCROLL DOWN…

Winter Wonderland

Snow covered every branch—and the woodpile—in Groton, New York during the Thanksgiving holiday last month. We love snow, so we were delighted!

Upstate New York turtles, including local snapping turtles and painted turtles are currently hibernating under this snow and cold water ponds (and eventually ice). We’re fascinated by the upstate New York endangered Blanding’s turtles, and have a sort of connection to Blanding’s turtles through our nephew, Andrew, who works to help them at Borderland State Park in Sharon, Massachusetts.

A Frozen Treat

2021 produced a bumper crop of apples from my parents’ trees in Groton, New York.

Here, a couple of deer help themselves to apples on the ground during the Thanksgiving holiday. You can see from the thermometer in the video that it was only about 20 degrees. Speaking of apples, my family are descendants of Johnny Appleseed!

Although cold weather sends turtles into hibernation, it’s always turtle time at our house in New Jersey, where we continue to care for Rocky, Gracie, Big Black Bart and Spike year-round.

We hope your Thanksgiving travels were blessed, as were ours. Although we always miss chances of seeing wild turtles in cold weather, we loved seeing snow on the way to upstate New York as well as on the way back to New Jersey. Thanks as always for reading!
