Multiple Daily Hatchlings Continued

Here we talk about how September 1st gave us multiple hatchlings coming from the same nest, including this one found in the middle of the day.

That made 10 hatchlings from this nest and a grand total of 68 baby turtles so far!

Who Says Turtles
Are Slow?

This little guy was really moving!

Another reason other hatchlings we discovered seemed so still is because a survival instinct would be to freeze in place once they suspected a predator might be near.

Whether choosing flight or fright, the turtle babies were always adorable!

Seven Days in a Row

Listen to hear about our seventh day in a row of finding baby turtles on September 2nd, when 4 more hatchlings appeared.

These were the first ones from this particular nest.

This was their first experience in water, and you can see especially from watching the fourth one that turtles don't need swimming lessons!

Three More
Were in Store!

Here we talk about how we found 3 more baby terrapins that evening, making a total of 7 new terrapins found that day.

That brought our total number of hatchlings found in our turtle sanctuary to: 75!

Chapter Eight: The Labor Day Weekend Massacre

If the title of this chapter sounds dramatic, that’s because it was! After finding so much turtle life every day for 7 days, we were shocked on September 3rd, the beginning of Labor Day weekend, to find a predated nest.

Nest predation could have been from any number of sources including mammals or birds.

This nest looks like 8 babies were eaten.

More Devastation

Listen to this video to hear how on the next day—Sunday, September 4th—we were once again devastated to find multiple predated nests.

I guess whatever got a taste for our turtle sanctuary the day before came back for more!

An End to the Devastation

Turn up your volume for more about what we discovered on Friday, September 9th: it looks like a raccoon attacked 2 more of our nests.

Many predators eat hatchlings, like gulls and crows (we saw crows just waiting for the turtles to finish nesting so they could come and eat the eggs, so we were glad we could cover the nests before they could do that). Other mammalian predators include skunks, opossums and foxes. But these tracks looked like raccoon tracks.

Unfortunately, the sand we provided that made it easier for the turtles to lay their eggs also probably made it easier to dig them up, too.

Chapter Nine: 79 Turtle Hatchlings!

Listen to hear how all was not lost as we found one more turtle amidst the devastation!

Backtracking a few days, on Saturday, September 3rd we did find 1 more live turtle hatchling from one of our grassier nests, bringing our grand total to 76!

The Good with the Bad

Turn up the volume to hear that Labor Day weekend wasn’t all bad! We did excavate another live turtle hatchling on Labor Day Monday, September 5th. That brought our total to 77 so far!

Then we actually found 2 more from this nest, bringing our 2022 TOTAL to 79! The total numbers of hatchlings each day were: 26, 19, 2, 2, 17, 2, 7, and 3! We still have one covered nest that could contain hatchlings waiting to emerge this spring!

We hope to repeat the entire process (minus the predation) this year! Thanks so much for coming on this Real-Life Turtle Fairy Tale adventure with us, and stay tuned for the upcoming and exciting Final Chapter!!!
