Terrapin Nests #13 and 14: VW and SUV

Listen to Charlie explain this video. Nest #13 was named "VW" when one woman driving a VW and another young woman stopped traffic in both directions. One yelled "I don't know what to do!" but at least they stopped traffic! Charlie picked up the terrapin and brought it into our yard. You can see VW went through a lot of marsh mud making her way to the road. She laid her eggs on June 30th at 9:45 a.m.

Charlie named terrapin #14 "SUV" after a guy in an SUV stopped, helped this turtle cross, and put her in our yard. SUV laid her eggs the same day at 9:50 a.m.! You can see how busy the traffic is on our road, and we were trying to keep an eye on the terrapin across the street to keep her from getting killed if she tried to cross the road after nesting! Welcome to the drama of nesting turtles all around our house during nesting season! Sometimes we see several at once, we are always scared they will get run over, and many do.

Terrapin Nest #15: Bushy

Charlie named this terrapin “Bushy” after we looked out the window and saw her in the bushes, where she came from onto our sand pile to lay her eggs on July 1st at 8:30 a.m. Here you will see 2 viewpoints: Bushy’s exit back into the marsh after laying her eggs was taken on a camera we placed on the turtle ramp, as well as our hand held camera.

Terrapin Nest #16: Tundra

Charlie named nest #16’s turtle after she was saved and placed on our property by someone driving a Toyota Tundra. She laid her nest in our sand pile on July 2nd at 9:35 a.m.

This video was taken from our overhead cam, and as you can see, sometimes the terrapins did not want to wait to go all the way down the ramp! Luckily the ones that hopped off early fell into soft mud or marsh grasses, and you can watch Tundra make her way to the water.

Terrapin Nests 17 and 18: Scotty and Stormy

"Scotty" (Nest #17) was named by Charlie after a guy with a Scottish terrier on the north side of the Blvd. saw a terrapin and brought it across the road to our sand pile. Charlie came out of our house and thanked him. Scotty laid her eggs on July 3rd at 7:20 a.m. You can see here that Scotty did not mind going the length of the turtle ramp to get back to the water, and that Charlie saw her surface again.

Charlie named "Stormy" (Nest #18) after a woman in a Geo Storm SUV stopped for a turtle, picked her up and put her on our property. Charlie saw this and came out as she drove away. Stormy laid her eggs the same day at 9:15 a.m.

The next day on July 4th we participated in the North Wildwood Family Parade to help remind people to stop for turtles crossing the road. Maybe turtles laid eggs in our sand pile that we weren’t there in person to see, but it broke our hearts seeing over 3 dozen dead terrapins on the roads as we drove to the parade lineup.

Terrapin Nests 19 and 20: Traffic Stop 1 and Traffic Stop 2

These nests were laid within an hour of each other. "Traffic Stop 1" (Nest #19) got her name from when we heard the traffic stop from inside the house, went to the window and saw someone put this turtle on our property and drive away. Traffic Stop 1 laid her eggs on July 5th at 10:26 a.m.

"Traffic Stop 2" (Nest #20) was found while filming Traffic Stop 1, as someone stopped and put her on our property. She laid her eggs at 10:55 a.m. Watch carefully and you can see her surface again 3 times!

Terrapin Nest #21: Bulkhead

Watch the bottom of the screen. "Bulkhead" was named for this terrapin you'll see walking east right down our bulkhead! She almost went down the ramp but didn't because she had not yet laid her eggs! We’re not sure how long she had been on our property before we saw her. Bulkhead laid Nest #21 on July 6th at 9:05 a.m.

Terrapin Nest #22: Hands Off

Scroll to the the top of the screen, and in under 3 minutes watch the 1 ½ hour nesting travels (minus the actual nesting) of "Hands Off"! She laid Nest #22 at 6:10 a.m. on July 10th. After she climbs the ramp and the screen changes, scroll up midway and look on the right for her entrance. After she finishes nesting and leaves the screen, watch for her coming in from the left next to the bulkhead.

We usually pick up the terrapin from the sand pile to photograph and scan her for any microchips, but I insisted Charlie just process her without picking her up, so she was never touched by us. With her it was Hands Off all the way!

Mission accomplished: this wild turtle never had to cross the deadly road because she could get over our bulkhead using the turtle ramp!

Terrapin Nest #23: Bushy Laid Another Nest!

Terrapins can lay more than once in a nesting season, and "Bushy" (who laid nest #15) was helped across the road again and laid again on July 15th at 7:58 a.m.! Terrapins have distinctive patterns on their shells, and we could tell by comparing these photos from both nesting days that she was the same one. She laid nest #23 not far from where she laid the first nest!

We believe Nest #24 is another false alarm, as we did not actually see a terrapin nesting there.

Our 2022 Terrapin Nesting Season ended July 27th with 11 nests, so we were excited to have 23 nests in 2023! We're so grateful our turtle ramp provides an alternative to the slaughter of so many terrapins killed crossing our busy road! We're also so grateful for friends, neighbors, and strangers who helped and saved terrapins and made these 23 nests possible.

Thanks so much for finishing reading about our 2023 nesting terrapins. The next 2 blogs will deal with what hatched from the nests!
