ACUA Virtual Earth Month!

Earth Worm for Earth Month!

Earth worms are important for composting, which is one of the ways to recycle yard waste.

You can learn all about EcoSoil at the ACUA website at www.acua.com.

Bart loves focusing on earth worms not only in honor of ACUA Virtual Earth Month: but any day of the year! Earth worms are one of Bart’s favorite treats.

Turtle Sign

Here you can see a turtle sign next to the storm drain by our house on Stone Harbor Boulevard in Cape May County, New Jersey.

What do turtles have to do with storm drains?

For a closer look at this turtle sign, and to find out the answer, SCROLL DOWN…

No Dumping on Sea Turtles

This sign is for sea turtles (you know they’re sea turtles when you see they have flippers). It is a reminder not to dump anything harmful to sea turtles down a storm drain because it will flow into the ocean: home of the sea turtles! So, be sure to dispose of chemicals properly.

Incidentally, local diamondback terrapin hatchlings sometimes get washed into storm drains. They are marsh turtles, not sea turtles, but they hatch close to some of the storm drains. Luckily for them, many volunteers get them out.

Litter affects all turtles, but it affects sea turtles the most, so we'll be featuring sea turtles and how litter affects them.

Take Litter Out of Reach When You're at the Beach!

Believe it or not, this is a beach frequented by sea turtles to nest and lay their eggs.

It looks like it would be hard to build a sand castle here, and even harder to lay eggs and hope baby sea turtles can make it through the trash to get to the ocean!

So, please help sea turtles and other creatures by picking up any and all trash on the beach!

To see how difficult it is for sea turtles and hatchlings to deal with litter-strewn beaches, SCROLL DOWN…

Litter in the Way!

Sea turtles go through an arduous process to lay their eggs, and hatchlings have a tough enough time as it is even when a beach is free of litter.

But this video from another part of the world is a reminder of how litter affects sea turtles.

You can do your part to help turtles everywhere by making sure trash is disposed of properly, and picking up any trash you see.

Beach Perfection

When it comes to beach perfection, "perfection is achieved not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away" (and by nothing left, we mean no trash).

When litter is not present, you can see the turtle tracks in the sand as shown here.

We visited this perfect and pristine sea turtle beach in Bundaberg, Australia, where we watched endangered loggerhead sea turtles lay their eggs.

We’ll be showing you some special video taken there later in this blog.

For a reminder of how long trash lasts, SCROLL DOWN…

How Long Litter Lasts

This is a sign right by a beach in Cape May County.

We love the message at the bottom of the sign about leaving nothing at the beach except your footprints!

Sea turtles often eat plastic bags, thinking they are jellyfish, a favorite sea turtle food.

To see a sea turtle doing exactly that, SCROLL DOWN…

Dangerous Bite

This poor sea turtle is making a big mistake, probably thinking it is biting down on a delicious jellyfish!

A 2016-pound leatherback sea turtle once starved to death after eating 1 plastic bag:

One plastic bag killed a 1-ton turtle!

Little Sea Turtle Song

Enjoy watching these endangered sea turtles emerging from their nest while listening to the song.

You can read all the words to the song, if you wish, by going to the June 16, 2020 Turtlesinger Blog page. We posted the lyrics at the bottom of that blog in honor of World Sea Turtle Day.

Right after this video was taken, we helped guide all the baby sea turtles down the beach to the ocean using flashlights!

Now that you’ve seen sea turtle hatchlings on both a littered beach and a clean one, for another beach sign that helps sea turtles, SCROLL DOWN…

Doing Your Part

Here’s another sign helpful for sea turtles on another Cape May County beach, this time in North Wildwood.

Isn’t it wonderful we can all do something about trash and thereby help sea turtles whenever we walk on the beach?

Finally, to see a happy sea turtle, SCROLL DOWN…

Doing Your Part

This happy sea turtle was photographed in Mexico!

We’ve been lucky to see beautiful, happy sea turtles in Hawaii, Costa Rica, Australia, St. Croix, and the Galapagos Islands! Sea turtles and other turtles are some of earth’s most precious creatures, and we can help them by making sure trash stays out of their homes.

Thank you for doing your part! For a turtle sticker or bookmark prize in honor of ACUA Virtual Earth Month, just push the feedback button on the right, tell us your turtle story (everybody has one), and give us your name and mailing address.
